Turkmen Chuval Yomud. Circa 1880. 98 X 72 Cm
Turkmen chuval yomud. Circa 1900
The chuval is a traditional bag used by Turkmen nomads to store and transport their belongings. On this piece, wide bands of weathered brick-red surround a richly ornamented central panel. This contrast between the solid surfaces and the density of the decoration gives the composition a beautiful balance and naturally draws the eye to the central field.
Small diamond-shaped motifs spread diagonally across the entire surface. Embroidered using a second weft thread, they lend the design its texture and contrast. Ivory and dark blue accents punctuate the red background, while a geometric border, enlivened by angular shapes and small motifs, highlights the central panel without interrupting the flow of the design.
Remarkable state of preservation
For an object over a century old, its state of preservation is remarkable. This quality is evident on both the intricately crafted front and the woven back. The weavers designed these textiles to withstand nomadic use and repeated handling. This sturdiness explains why the chuval has stood the test of time while preserving the full integrity of its structure.
