“bulls And Heroes” Stele Ceramic Claude Agier Mollinari
Artist: Claude Agier Mollinari
Here is another ceramic piece by the French ceramic artist Claude Agier Mollinari. It is part of a series of works inspired by ancient alphabets. Created by applying an ancient cylinder seal, this impression faithfully reproduces the original designs. The seal belongs to a private collector. It was entrusted to the artist as part of her research and in light of Claude’s evident interest in cuneiform scripts. The seal from the Akkadian period (2350–2200 BCE):
Two scenes: two human-faced bulls, standing upright, back-to-back and connected by two small horizontal lines. Between them is a vertical staff. Two bearded, naked heroes grasp the bulls’ front legs. One of the heroes turns his head toward the next scene. A bull with a human face wrestles with a lion standing upright before him, its mouth open and tail raised. Inscriptions: a reproduction of a royal inscription in Sumerian on a brick from Isin’s King Isme-Dagan (1953–1935 BC). British Museum. The artist works from original sources and authentic tools, lending this work a dimension that is at once scholarly, archaeological, and conceptual. These engraved symbols reflect his approach to transmitting and offering a contemporary reinterpretation of ancient knowledge through ceramics. The exterior surface features a deliberately smooth texture for the sand-colored portion and a grainy texture for the glazed borders.
