Khorjin Bathiyari Fragment. Persia. Circa 1880. 90 X 68 Cm

A rare fragment of a double pouch (khorjin) woven by the Bakhtiari nomadic tribes of southwestern Persia in the late 19th century.
Crafted using a mixed-media technique of wool-on-wool, this piece showcases the exceptional craftsmanship of the Bakhtiari weavers, who made these bags to carry personal belongings during their seasonal migrations.
The composition centers on a large central panel with a midnight blue background, enlivened by a series of staggered diamonds—protective scorpions! 
This central field is framed by several borders featuring meticulously arranged geometric patterns, which enhance the overall balance of the piece.
The main section is woven using the sumak technique, topped by a band of short-pile velvet knotwork and complemented by narrow woven bands.

The color palette, dominated by madder reds, indigo blue, browns, and ivories, is achieved using natural plant-based dyes.
The piece as a whole offers a remarkable sense of balance.
