Maffrash Karabag Caucasus. Circa 1880. 78 X 46 Cm

Beautiful fragment of Karabakh Maffrash from Armenia in the Caucasus.
Maffrash are the largest carrying bags once used by the nomadic populations of Persia and the Caucasus.
Consisting of 4 panels, 2 rectangular and 2 square on a woven background.
Sumak wool on wool technique. The weaving is extremely precise, like goldsmith's work. The motifs seem to be sculpted into the material.
Exclusively vegetable hues of great purity and perfect harmony.
This panel alone contains all the skill and dexterity of the Armenian nomadic populations.
Small museum piece.
Circa 1880 or earlier.
