Before we look at its composition and motifs, let's start with a full assessment of its condition. Our restorer Saïd has fully protected it. The bangs at each end have been completely redone and protected with a stitch. Likewise, the liserets that make up the lengths were restored. Around 3 or 4 days of restoration gave this piece a new lease of life. Considering the age of the piece and the wear of time, we hardly touched the surface. That said, if you wish, we can go further and restore the entire surface too.
The piece is remarkable. The comb-like motifs are called "parmaklı" which means "fingers" in Turkish. They symbolize the clan, the family, group life and solidarity within a group. The graphic power is total and perfectly mastered in a succession of horizontal bands covering the entire field. The palette of plant hues completes the picture, creating contrasts and relief. It's a real painting to be placed on the floor or hung on a wall. The format is rare, compact, almost square. I should point out here that this is a fragment and that the piece originally exceeded 3 meters, or even much more if you consider its width.
A thing of beauty, "parmaklı" kilims really do have something that others don't!
