Kilim Fethiye - Anatolia. Circa 1920. 275 X 162 Cm
Often, and always with the same enthusiasm, I explain the difference between a kilim and a carpet.
Finally, my role is to open the eye.
It's easy to dwell on the technical aspect. The kilim is woven. It's the story of two intertwining threads. The warp determines the length and the weft creates the patterns, the visible part...
As for the carpet, it is knotted. In other words, on a woven structure, the weaver uses a second weft thread with which she makes knots, creating the more or less thick pile.
Let's move beyond the technical aspect and move progressively closer to this piece. I think we can consider that the art of weaving, as sublimated by the boundless creativity of nomadic populations, goes beyond the realm of design. To this, I juxtapose, in simplified terms of course, the manufacture of carpets, where the weaver often has a pattern that she must reproduce...
At first glance, one may be surprised by the obvious differences in tone on one of the ends. But that's precisely where the charm of this Anatolian kilim lies. No, it's not fading due to wear or prolonged exposure to light.
It's in the weave. The idea that the weaver didn't have enough wool is as false as it is underestimating the talent of her creator. Nothing is due to chance in the presence of such a work.
Origine: Fethiye / Southwest Anatolia.
Woven wool on wool.
The weaving is a marvel, fine, regular.
The piece is supple, surprisingly light.
Magnificent vegetal hues and that golden yellow is to wring with pleasure!
Circa 1920
Very fine condition
Graphic, authentic and highly decorative.
Dim: 275 x 162 cm
