Konya Kilim. Anatolia. Mid-20th Century. 180 X 130 Cm
From time to time, I explore a particular theme. This piece inspires me and allows me to experiment with abrash. It’s a technique that creates variations in color intensity around a single hue. Here, it’s a real spectacle.
While preparing the plant-based dyes, the weaver draws out strands of wool at regular intervals. Her first strands are extremely light in color, while later ones are dense and saturated with plant matter or minerals. She then forms small balls of yarn, ranging from the lightest to the darkest. Placed on the upper part of the loom, the interplay of color nuances can begin.
Whether randomly or guided by her creativity, the weaver selects weft threads of various colors, creating surfaces filled with gradients. The effect is both visual and aesthetic. The eye is drawn to these soft tones and this natural harmony. The surfaces are vibrant and dynamic; we are captivated.
This kilim originates from the Konya region in Central Anatolia. Woven with wool over wool. All the brown sections on the borders are made of natural, undyed camel wool.
The central field features a large ascending motif, the Tree of Life. Nearly all the motifs are associated with protection: ram’s horns, snakes, stylized scorpions, hooks, amulets…
The weaving is remarkable, executed with great finesse; the piece is supple and lightweight. A true work of art. At one end, the fringes are woven in a mesh pattern.
Exclusively plant-based dyes.
Hand-spun wool.
Wonderful.
Can be placed on the floor or hung on the wall, given its directional pattern running from bottom to top.
Like new.
Dimensions: 180 x 130 cm
