Kilim - Cuval. Anatolia. Circa 1920. 140 X 110 Cm
In a near-miraculous state of preservation, a beautiful Cuval from the Gaziantep region of southeastern Anatolia.
Cuvals belong to the category of everyday objects once used by nomadic populations to transport and store grain. They were woven by the best weavers. The idea was not simply to have a utilitarian and sturdy object, but also a true work of art, making their owners proud and happy.
The geometric motifs in the central part are entirely embroidered, thanks to the use of a second weft thread.
We will observe and appreciate the dexterity and infinite precision of these motifs, which seem literally sculpted in the material.
This is great art!
Wool on wool.
Magnificent deep, luminous vegetal hues.
Circa 1920
