Kilim Shahsaven - Persia. Late 19th Century. 140 X 100 Cm. Rug
At first glance, it’s the colors that catch our eye. Their brilliance, their freshness, and the way they’re arranged—all while blending together in perfect harmony—give this room a truly extraordinary presence.
These are saturated hues: to achieve such intensity, a significant amount of plant material had to be used. This is what gives them both their depth and their remarkable luminosity.
But the piece’s balance also stems from its motifs. The large figures in the central field are not really medallions. Rather, they resemble stylized scorpions, symbols of protection. There is an evocative power in these forms that interacts with the balance of the composition, both in the motifs and in the colors.
Between these large sections, horizontal bands give rhythm to the surface. They are adorned with small crenellated diamonds, each containing a cross. These motifs evoke the eye, itself a symbol of protection against the evil eye.
The weaving lives up to this perfectly executed composition. It is extremely fine, precise, and even. The piece is both supple and light, and as soon as you hold it in your hands, you can feel the mastery of its craftsmanship.
Shahsavan. Persia.
Woven and embroidered.
Wool on wool.
Plant-based dyes.
Circa 1880.
