Beloutche Old Rug, 77 Cm X 123 Cm, Hand Knotted, Iran, Early 20th Century

Artist: Tribus Baloutches
Ancient belutch rug from the beginning of the 20th century in wool on wool, 77 cm wide by 123 cm long
. A large rectangular-shaped mihrab of these carpets is placed on a wine-colored field and surrounded by a thin camel border with the motif of "dog running".
A small tree of life, brown, very stylized and typical of these carpets, rests on a series of three polygons decorated with hooks and wurma, (rams' horns) interspersed with patterns of stairs. The set is surrounded by two striated stripes and two broad borders with a considerable number of patterns resembling a crowd of seated and different characters in the alternation of the drawing.
A kilim finish is found at each end of the carpet, followed by short fringes of beige wool blend. This model, helps us to understand how and with what creativity, characters, plants and figurative scenes can be transformed and transcribed in abstract patterns, readable and this by nomadic tribes whose school and work of knotting exist only by oral and manual transmissions.
It is suggested that the Baluch or Baluchi carpets originate from Baluchistan, which is by no means the case, they are knotted further north, in Khorassan, Iran, on the Russo-Iranian border, they are given for the most beautiful models the name Mecched, capital of Khorassan. These are nomadic carpets, so that the sizes are quite small, chains and wefts until recently were still wool, but the use of cotton has supplanted the wool, the knot used remains the Persian knot. The large number of motifs used shows the Persian influence, and the geometric characters link them to the Central Asian carpet family, which is not the case.
The bottom is regularly camel or wine-colored, especially for prayer rugs that are the most sought after and the most interesting.
The Mihrabs are always rectangular, unlike the rounded niches knotted on the prayer rugs that can be seen in all other regions, and the interior decoration often reveals a great geometrical development, in all the symbolism.
The last photo will show you another model of prayer belts that we propose on Proantic.
