Maffrash Karabakh Fragment. Caucasus. Circa 1825. 46 X 43 Cm. Rug
Our collection includes more than a hundred of these fragments and complete mafrash. Among them are some true treasures, such as this small Armenian panel from the first quarter of the 19th century.
The mafrash was a type of textile bag or chest that nomadic peoples used to store and transport their blankets and personal belongings. This fragment is one of the panels that made up these everyday objects.
Its small size makes its historical significance and the quality of its craftsmanship all the more remarkable. It showcases the artistry and dexterity of the Armenian weavers of Karabakh: exceptional finesse, worthy of great textile art. The precision of this work suggests the many months required to create such a panel.
Large polygonal medallions and cruciform shapes organize the field. In the borders, S-shaped lines coil and echo one another, perhaps evoking stylized dragons, a motif common in certain ancient Karabakh works. The octagons may evoke the idea of eternity, while the crosses lend the piece a spiritual resonance. These interpretations remain suggestive: they add to the piece’s mystery without confining its motifs to a single interpretation.
