Taurus Mountains Kilim. Anatolia. Circa 1900. 255 X 146 Cm
Those of you who read my work and are familiar with our passion for antique weavings know that I sometimes take certain liberties by choosing a particular perspective, one that is most often driven by emotion.
As I looked at this extraordinary piece, I began to imagine the weaver’s feelings as she created this kilim, as well as the first impressions of those present once the work was finished.
So here we are in the heights of the Taurus Mountains, likely in the village of Mut, a stronghold of ancestral traditions in the art of weaving. Our weaver is experienced; her work must already be recognized and appreciated.
The warp is stretched across the loom.
The first weft threads follow one another in a succession of reddish-ochre horizontal bands interspersed with narrower navy blue bands. Then color comes into play, in the form of hexagons containing other hourglass-shaped motifs. It is from here that the spectacle will begin.
A line of undulating motifs, like flowing water, symbolizing vitality and nomadism. The first patterns with more complex shapes then appear; they too will form two broad, powerful borders within which the central field will emerge like a chromatic explosion bordering on chaos. Rest assured, everything is under control; there is no aggression, only perfect harmony. The ecru field will welcome all the overflowing creativity of our weaver. Movement, symmetry within asymmetry, a profusion of juxtaposed, linear, oblique, and repeated forms. A sort of joyful and unapologetic madness. Toward the other end, which is drawing near, we find that wide band that gave rise to this entire narrative—scorpions and wolf’s heads, still associated with protection. The work ends as it began, in red ochre and navy blue...
And now, it is you, in the place of those people gathered around, who are discovering this marvelous kilim for the first time!
