Malayer Rug, 103 X 188 Cm, Hand-knotted Wool, Iran, Circa 1900, Very Good Collector's Condition

Artist: Artisans De Malayer
Malayer rug from Iran, late 19th century, circa 1900
A small wool rug with a cotton weft, 103 cm wide and 188 cm long.

The wool is particularly soft and lustrous, making the motifs shimmer.
The knotting is dense, with around 360,000 knots per M2, making this a thick, comfortable rug.
The decor is very bright, rendered in vibrant colors of deep red, cream, midnight blue and orange, all enhanced by black.

The field decoration is knotted with large, stylized trees of life in full bloom, surrounding an irregularly worked medallion along the length.

The medallion supports two pendants along its length.
It is predominantly black, with the right and left motifs having a different design.

Four spandrels underline the field surrounded by a fine border whose motifs resemble "Botehs", a type of teardrop decoration found in Iran but also on many Caucases.
We can see that the knotter has given pride of place to the field of this carpet by giving it large dimensions and minimizing the border to eight cm wide .

Malayer carpets are knotted in thick, strong, shiny yarn, dyed with natural dyes, often with geometric designs, sometimes with floral decorations.
Carpets from this region are also called, Hamadan, in the same way as Hosseinabad carpets, Bortchalou, or Lilihan.
This model has been restored a long time ago ( but remarkably ) on the selvedges, and has slight wear, its wool is very clean and retains colors of magnificent brilliance.

This carpet has been professionally cleaned and ecologically.
