Sumak Rug. Persia. Mid-20th Century. 200 X 107 Cm

I’m often asked about the quality of recent or semi-vintage pieces, as is the case here.  Unfortunately, it must be admitted that the art of weaving has gradually lost its prestige. The weaves are no longer as fine or tight, chemical dyes have replaced plant-based ones, and so on...
Fortunately, there are still exceptions that suggest this art will endure. Here is a fine example.
A mid-20th-century Sumak, crafted according to traditional methods, originating from the Kocan region of Persia.
Sumak is a weaving technique similar to embroidery. Performed without a needle, it requires a second weft thread woven at an angle to create all the surface patterns. It originated in Persia.
At first glance, one is instantly captivated by a very diverse palette of colors.
Indigo blue, orange, green, yellow, ochre, brown, ecru...
While the motifs are certainly characteristic of this region, their arrangement is intriguing, creating a beautiful harmony and a sense of vibrancy.
