Kilim Shahsaven - Persia. Late 19th Century. 120 X 90 Cm. Rug
When I look at this piece, what immediately strikes me is its composition—with its motifs and its very assertive, almost graphic geometry. And then there’s the color. Here, each shade is placed in a very specific spot. The color, too, is organized.
It acts like a language. It accompanies the patterns, sometimes seeming to extend their symbolism—what they evoke. Everything responds to one another: the composition, the shapes, the choice of colors. The patterns recur and repeat, with as much symmetry as there are small variations that break up the order.
And that is where, in my view, a certain musicality emerges. When you look at this piece, you are almost swept away by this succession of motifs and colors, as if you were following a musical score. There is a true outpouring of emotions, yet everything is perfectly orchestrated.
I am in awe of this almost magical resolution of such complexity. It all ultimately forms a natural, fluid, and musical harmony. That is truly my first impression of this piece, which I would describe as exceptional.
