A superb fragment of a Maffrash from Karabakh, originally from Armenia in the Caucasus.
Maffrash are the largest transport bags used by the nomadic peoples of Persia and the Caucasus.
This fragment is part of one of the two large panels.
Sumak technique, wool on wool.
The piece is in a state of preservation that borders on the miraculous.
At first glance, one is instantly captivated by the multiple reflections of the indigo blues. Their freshness and purity create a sort of relief on the surface. It’s wonderful.
