Ferahan Gallery Rug, 92 X 396 Cm, Hand-knotted Wool, Made In Iran Circa 1880–1900,
Artist: Art D'iran
Ferahan or Féraghan gallery rug, 92 cm wide by 396 cm long.
Dated to the second half of the 19th century, in excellent collectible condition.
Featuring Herati motifs across a midnight blue and buff field.
A beautiful border in light red and cream, featuring a sublime design of three friezes filled with stylized leaves and flowers; the border is enhanced by bold colors that play off one another.
The balance of colors in this rare piece is truly admirable.
Note the beautiful color shift, known as “abrash,” at the carpet’s entry.
This lends great elegance to the border.
The pile remains in good condition and is graced with the beautiful patina characteristic of these antique carpets.
This gallery shows no signs of wear in the pile or weft.
The field colors found on these rugs are midnight blue, deep red, lime green, and cream.
# The border or field of certain antique Féraghan rugs exhibits a curious effect resulting from the application of a mixture of a plant—Persian euphorbia—and copper sulfate, which produces “wolf’s milk,” as the locals call it.
This mixture has a corrosive effect on the carpet’s pile, resulting in the cream or lime green color typical of these very old carpets.
This chemical reaction brings out the border’s design in relief.
Feraghan rugs were long the favorites of the English.
Their bold and attractive colors inspired British interior designers.
The characteristic design was the Herati pattern with its rosette, diamond, and curly leaves.
These rugs originate from the Féraghan district, east of Arak, a region of fertile plains in Iran.
Our rug is in very good condition for its age, exhibits the characteristics described above, and is a beautiful rug that will withstand many more years of use.
This rug has been professionally cleaned using eco-friendly methods.
