Ghashghai rug decorated with juxtaposed medallions, rare antique model from the end of the 19th century. It measures 136 cm wide by 201 cm long, in high quality soft wool on wool. Piece from Iran in magnificent condition with slight wear. The light colors on the dark field give a bright contrast. The design is very complex for an ethnic rug: Two large medallions, placed on a dark field, reveal many stylized plants. The borders, numerous, all compete in beauty and ancient tribal motifs: Symbol of eternity, medahil (arrows), large flowers, trees of life.... embellish the entire perimeter with great elegance. Velvet, edges and fringes in good condition with a beautiful patina and Slight wear from use. The mixed hair fringes are in good condition. They often contain goat, sheep, camel, or horsehair wool. These mixtures are found in most ethnic rugs from Iran, Central Asia and the Caucasus. The muted colors of a shiny and soft wool contrast with the light: ivory, pink, orange, curry, blue, brown, of all the patterns placed on the darker field, causing a striking and luminous contrast. These rugs are mainly dyed today with natural, mineral and vegetable products. These rugs are knotted in the Shiraz region located near ancient Persepolis. Persepolis gave its name to Persia, today Iran. Shiraz is in the province of Fars where the Gashghai tribes reside and produce rugs under the two names, Shiraz or Ghashghai. This rug of great beauty and high quality was hung as a decoration on the wall, small rings are present on the back of the rug, hence its superb state of preservation.
