Gabbeh Rug, 129 X 247 Cm, Wool On Wool, Hand-knotted In Iran, Early 20th Century

Artist: Tribu Des Gashghaïs
Artist : Gashghai tribes

Antique Gabbeh rug from the early 20th century, circa 1920–1940.
It measures 129 cm wide by 247 cm long.

In Farsi—one of the Persian languages—"Gabbeh" means "raw, natural, whole," and refers to a rug characterized by a coarse and rather primitive pattern.
They are most often knotted by the Gashghai nomads of Fars Province, in southwestern Iran.
These rugs are likely the most famous hand-knotted nomadic rugs from Iran, as they are very fashionable today.

They are made of hand-spun wool, both for the pile and the warp, and the yarn is dyed with vegetable dyes.
These rugs are much thicker than other Persian rugs, sometimes reaching up to 2.5 cm in thickness with long pile.

The rug’s pattern is often simple, featuring only a few decorative motifs—mostly rectangular—depicting animals.

Over the past five decades, to meet Western tastes, weavers have begun incorporating large, light-colored fields into Gabbeh rugs, featuring sparse decoration that is highly appealing for its simplicity.
However, some highly ornate designs can be found on vibrant fields, such as our example.
These have been influenced by the Baluch style from further north.

This rug is in fine condition and is intended for a collector who appreciates the patina of age.
Its brilliant colors are of rare beauty; it features a lovely patina and signs of wear befitting its age.
