Shirvan Rug - Caucasus. Dated 1913. 215 X 122 Cm

A sumptuous Shirvan Caucasian carpet originating from Azerbaijan. The piece is dated at the top. It bears the inscription in Farsi, 1331 of the Islamic calendar, which corresponds to 1913 of the Gregorian calendar. The composition of this prestigious carpet is both astonishingly rich and varied. Let us begin by observing the majestic presence of the stylized Mihrab. It is represented in part by only the pointed element. Moving down, we find the Tree of Life positioned inside the Mihrab, as if protected by it. Next, in the central section, is an eight-pointed medallion on a dense and saturated indigo blue background. Then, a whole series of extremely diverse motifs related to protection—talismanic motifs. These are executed with perfect precision and mastery. The leafy borders complete and frame this rare and exquisitely beautiful piece. Imagine—and the photos cannot show it—that the small cobalt blue border presents two different textures in an almost imperceptible variation of thickness. Tones of carmine red, blues, indigo, cobalt, turquoise, ivory, green... nothing but vegetal hues to marvel at in such purity and freshness. The pile is short.
