Sofreh Bathiyari - Persia. Circa 1920. 104 X 100 Cm
This piece has a certain charm.
Attributed to the Bakhtiari of Persia, this sofreh is an everyday textile used in bread-making. It was spread out to knead the dough, let it rest, and then place the bread on it. The central field consists of an unbleached camel wool weave, preserved in its natural color.
The decorated borders form a frame around this field; their sawtooth pattern creates a continuous movement that runs along all four sides of the piece.
In the large central field, two small star-shaped motifs catch the eye. They are actually two restorations, executed with creativity and seamlessly integrated into the piece’s design.
The entire field is dotted with numerous abrash—those variations in tone that appear in handwoven textiles. Here, since the camel wool is undyed, these nuances stem from its natural color variations.
The weaving is a marvel—extremely fine, precise, and even. The piece is surprisingly light and supple to the touch; one immediately senses the delicacy and airiness of its weave.
