Karabakh Kilim - Armenia. Circa 1880. 425 X 220 Cm

This antique Karabakh kilim, made in Armenia, is a true sight to behold. Its exceptional dimensions—425 x 230 cm—create a striking effect. When we unfurl it in the main hall of our gallery, the reactions are along the lines of “Wow!”
It features a highly structured composition, built around two large polygonal medallions superimposed on the central axis. Each is organized into several nested registers and contains a large geometric rosette with serrated edges, surrounded by small stylized floral motifs.
The background, a deep coral pink, is punctuated by large, symmetrically arranged dark brown areas. These panels feature motifs reminiscent of palmettes, open flowers, and geometric bouquets, rendered in a contrasting palette of indigo blue, light blue, ivory, yellow, garnet red, and bottle green.
The design is framed by several narrow borders. The main border alternates between octagonal medallions, diamonds, and small stylized plant motifs, while the outer borders are accented with triangular motifs.
The wool-on-wool weave is perfectly suited to the design, extremely fine and tight.
