Turkmen Yomud textiles are remarkable for their refinement, the skill of their weavers, and, as a result, their ability to withstand the test of time without showing any signs of wear or fading.
It’s impressive.
This fully embroidered kilim features an extremely tight weave, pushing the limits of what is feasible. It is truly great art; the craftsmanship is flawless.
A second weft thread is woven into this structure to create all the patterns and the entire design.
In the central field, a series of stylized scorpions appears, symbolizing protection.
Balance is found in the geometry and repetition. It’s only a short step from here to graphic design. Clearly, the piece is highly decorative.
Add to this the use of deep, luminous plant-based dyes—typical of ancient Turkmen pieces—and you have this piece that is both subtle and powerful, in an extremely rare narrow format (108 cm).
