Everything about this kilim from Hakkari, located in the far east of Anatolia, is exceptional. From this region of production, one can expect nothing less than excellence in every respect. The Kurdish people of the region are well known for their dexterity, the exquisite precision of their weaving, and a selection of colors of unmatched purity. The wool is hand-spun and of remarkable quality; the warp threads are visible in the braided, mesh-like fringes, serving as a signature.
The weaving is masterful, executed with the precision of a watchmaker. The piece is supple and extraordinarily sturdy. It was made to last. Likewise, the rich, saturated colors possess a durability that spans centuries. The traditional techniques used have now almost completely disappeared; they produced hues as deep as they were luminous, in perfect harmony—recognizable among thousands.
Against a background organized into successive horizontal bands in shades of midnight blue, indigo, and madder red, small S-shaped motifs appear like sparkling diamonds, along with hooks that evoke a sense of protection.
In a state of preservation bordering on the miraculous, this sparkling kilim is both a work of art and a highly decorative, well-documented piece.
