Cuval, çanakkale. Anatolia. Circa 1880. 93 X 61 Cm
Cuval are grain bags used by the nomadic peoples of Anatolia.
They are part of the broad category of everyday objects.
This one has all the characteristics of late 19th-century pieces—the colors, of course, as well as its distinctive patterns.
Mixed-media technique: wool on wool.
The front is primarily executed using the Sumak technique, while the back is woven.
The color palette is limited to deep indigo blue and saturated madder red.
Typical. We are not seeking originality but authenticity. Pieces of this type in such condition are virtually impossible to find unless you have a circle of collector friends.
Today, cuvals are purely decorative objects; they are living witnesses to the past. We no longer come across such precious objects that could enhance our daily lives—though I wish I were wrong.
