Qashqai Kilim - Persia. Circa 1920. 300 X 165 Cm

Magnificent, understated, and perfectly balanced, this Qashqai kilim originates from Persia, in southwestern Iran. Its composition and classic tribal symbolic language make this piece instantly recognizable. More graphic and, above all, less formal than medallion kilims, the design is organized through a succession of horizontal bands featuring varied motifs.
Let’s take a closer look at the wide bands without any apparent pattern. These should by no means be seen as empty space. On the contrary, these spaces contain the two main elements. The coral red evokes the Earth, and the indigo blue, the Sky. Delicate abrash effects are visible here, creating undulating movements in the form of different shades within the same color.
Most of the motifs that make up the design belong to the broad family of motifs evoking protection. We see the Eye against the evil eye incorporated into diamond shapes. Then there are the ecru and red triangles, each serving as an amulet.
This vast garden—which makes up the entire central field—is also protected by an unbroken alignment of chain-like motifs that evoke both continuity and peripheral protection.
The visual energy is at once powerful, controlled, and completely free. This is typical of ancient Qashqai nomadic works—like a signature.
The colors are exclusively plant-based; they are dense, sometimes saturated, yet the composition exudes a certain softness, like a gentle breeze in perfect harmony. Connoisseurs and collectors alike will fully appreciate the presence of a bottle-green hue—a green that leans toward yellow. This shade has been completely absent for a century. It is created by mixing indigo blue and yellow.
Masterfully hand-woven with wool over wool. The weaving is on par with the aesthetic appeal.
