This spectacular kilim originates from Sivas in Anatolia. Woven using traditional methods. I date it to the mid-20th century, circa 1960.
The selection of hues plays a key role in the power of this composition. Madder red, brick red, wine red, deep brown, orange, ochre yellow, sage green, natural ivory, and a few accents of indigo blue alternate from one medallion to the next. The deeper, more muted colors contrast with the brighter oranges, while the lighter tones open up the composition and give it rhythm.
Its large dimensions allow the weaver to create a truly architectural textile design with a highly structured composition. The field is organized around two columns of large hexagonal medallions, separated by a striking central axis composed of a succession of diamonds. The side borders, much freer in design, feature numerous triangles, hooks, and small geometric motifs, lending a surprising dynamism to the whole.
With its extraordinary dimensions and graphic design, the piece is highly decorative.
