Heybe Double Satchel. Anatolia. Circa 1900. 116 X 50 Cm

This heybe belongs to the broad family of everyday textiles used by formerly nomadic peoples. Carried over the shoulder or placed on an animal’s back, this bag was used to transport the belongings and provisions needed for travel.
The back and frame are made of undyed goat’s wool, whose natural brown color provides a simple yet warm backdrop. The motifs, embroidered with sheep’s wool, form a dense and carefully arranged design.
On both sides, a network of interlaced diamonds forms a regular pattern, punctuated by small geometric motifs. The finesse of the work and the precision of the lines give the composition an almost architectural quality. The deep reds and indigo are brightened by ivory, while small touches of orange and pink enliven the design.
Here, the embroidery—using a second weft thread to create all the motifs—achieves a level of finesse rarely matched.
