Kuba Rug. Caucasus. Late 19th Century. 270 X 135 Cm

A marvel—currently one of the most beautiful pieces in our entire collection, of museum-quality.

More than just a rug, this piece is a true narrative object, an open book representing the entire culture and beliefs of the nomadic peoples of the Caucasus.
Originating from Kuba in Azerbaijan (Caucasus).
Traditionally woven and knotted using wool-on-wool technique. Salt-and-pepper warp.
The pile is short; the piece is supple and lightweight.
The knotting is worthy of the most experienced weavers, demonstrating complete mastery.
One of the most remarkable aspects of this Caucasian rug is the richness and diversity of its patterns. It features a veritable map of symbols dating back through the centuries.
Three large octagonal medallions in the central field each feature eight-pointed stars typical of this wonderful region of origin. Numerous crosses, rosettes, and ram’s horns. Most of the motifs carry symbolism related to protection and the cosmos.
The main borders are sublime. A succession of angular meanders known as the Greek key. Foliage adorns the outer border.
There are also numerous animal motifs.
The piece as a whole is truly beautiful.
The colors live up to this rich composition. Various shades of indigo blue in different intensities, turquoise, and midnight blue.
Red ochre, bottle green, khaki, straw yellow, and ivory.
Numerous abrash effects, particularly in the blues.
