A superb and rare fragment of a Gendje rug, originating from the Caucasus, in present-day Azerbaijan.

The composition is particularly captivating and instantly recognizable. Here, there is no central medallion around which the design is organized: everything is movement.
The field is entirely crisscrossed by a succession of polychrome diagonal bands, arranged parallel to one another and filled with small, highly stylized geometric and floral motifs. The eye glides naturally from one diagonal to the next, giving the whole a remarkable rhythm and dynamism. This oblique composition is precisely one of the most characteristic hallmarks of antique Gendje rugs.

Surrounding the central field, a first border in warm tones creates a transition before a spectacular succession of large polychrome rosettes. Madder red, indigo blue, turquoise, green, brown, and ivory interplay with astonishing freedom. A final border on an ivory background illuminates and frames the entire design.
The color palette alone makes this piece worth a closer look. Over time, the plant-based dyes have acquired remarkable depth and softness. Several shades of blue coexist, ranging from deep indigo to turquoise blue, accompanied by slightly iridescent greens, madder reds, warm browns, ochre, and natural ivory. The slight variations in tone, or abrash, are obviously not flaws: on the contrary, they constitute one of the most prized hallmarks of traditional dyes and artisanal craftsmanship.

Woven and knotted with wool-on-wool, this fragment possesses the finesse, density, and chromatic richness sought after in fine 19th-century Caucasian productions.
Beyond its ethnographic interest, it possesses a surprising graphic modernity today. The diagonal lines, the alternating colors, and the boldness of its borders make it almost an abstract composition.

A fragment, certainly, but above all a magnificent testament to the art of antique Caucasian rugs.
