Kazak Rug. Caucasus. Mid-20th Century. 255 X 140 Cm

A very elegant rug, traditionally woven and knotted using wool-on-wool technique. One immediately notices a design inspired by the formerly nomadic Kazakh people.
The pattern is not particularly traditional, featuring a central field in a deep, very vibrant madder red. The unexpected and alluring presence of olive green tones makes it a highly sought-after piece. The rug is identified as a Kazak Borjalou.
The white or ecru central medallion evokes a beautifully stylized scorpion. The entire composition of the rug seems to be organized around it.
An intriguing and delightful detail: the black section surrounding the scorpion is woven only—no knotted stitches! This gives the scorpion a three-dimensional appearance. (Photos 3 and 4). Beauty lies in the details...
The two circular medallions at each end of the points on the central field are typical of ancient Kazak rugs, serving as a signature of sorts. All these decorative elements and narrative motifs demonstrate the rug’s authenticity through a perfectly mastered balance.
The field is framed by continuous geometric borders that lend a sense of vitality. It also features the flowing water motif, a symbol of movement and fertility.
Another key characteristic—and by no means the least important—is the very high-quality, almost silky wool.
The pile is rather short, as is typical of most antique rugs from the Caucasus and Central Asia.
The colors are deep and luminous; they have retained their freshness intact over time.
Pretty braided fringes in a mesh pattern at one end.
