Set of two Mafrash Shahsavan panels – Persia – Late 19th century
A remarkable collector’s item, showcasing the craftsmanship of the nomadic Shahsavan weavers of Persia. This set consists of two antique mafrash panels, joined and sewn together to form a single, perfectly balanced piece. They complement each other so well that the assembly displays remarkable continuity in the patterns, with no apparent asymmetry.
Maffrash were large textile chests used by nomadic peoples to transport and store blankets, bedding, and personal belongings during their travels.
What immediately strikes the viewer is the extreme precision of the work. Created using the sumak technique—wool-on-wool—the patterns appear to be literally carved into the fabric. The sharpness of the contours, the finesse of the details, and the regularity of the weave attest to the weavers’ extraordinary dexterity and perfect mastery of their craft.
The composition is organized around a succession of four large, interconnected geometric medallions. Each contains a stylized cruciform motif, accompanied by symmetrical figures. Their particularly precise, serrated contours accentuate the graphic quality of the whole.
On either side of this central composition are a series of thin horizontal bands, adorned with small, repetitive geometric motifs. This rigorous design, in which each element naturally finds its place, lends the piece a particularly appealing balance.
The color palette plays a key role in the beauty of this piece. A magnificent madder red dominates the composition, paired with a deep indigo blue, shades of petrol blue, a luminous ochre yellow, and an ivory white. The contrasts are sharp, the colors harmonious, and the patterns perfectly clear.
Finally, its remarkable state of preservation is worth noting. Despite being some 150 years old, this piece has survived in exceptional condition.
