A highly expressive Caucasian kilim featuring Kazakh motifs. This piece showcases a composition that is very characteristic of ancient weaves from the South Caucasus, specifically Azerbaijan.
The thematic scope of its motifs revolves around protection, strength, and fertility.
The piece is highly graphic and decorative. Its design is instantly recognizable.
Organized into successive horizontal bands, this staggered repetition creates a rhythmic pattern along the longitudinal axis.
The most prominent motifs depict mirrored ram’s horns. These symbolize strength and protection. In the Caucasus in particular, they represent dragons.
At the center of each of these large motifs are diamond-shaped figures that are actually motifs associated with protection—the “eye” against the evil eye.
At each end, triangular motifs form protective barriers and create a visual rhythm.
