Shirvan Rug - Caucasus. Circa 1920. 200 X 120 Cm
A unique Shirvan rug from Azerbaijan in the Caucasus.
Traditionally woven and knotted using wool-on-wool construction.
As is always the case with antique Caucasian rugs, the pile is very short, almost flush.
The rug is supple and surprisingly light.
This is due to the fineness and uniformity of the knots. A true work of art.
Aesthetically, it features a combination of rather subdued hues, though with a saturated indigo-blue section in the center. This is the originality—and, one might say, the soul—of this piece.
Three large medallions on the central field are framed by a main border featuring stylized floral motifs.
In short, the piece exudes a rare elegance.
It is a far cry from the classic Caucasian styles. Here, simplicity reigns; the motifs seem carved into the fabric. The craftsmanship is flawless.
