Baluch Carpet, 95 X 158 Cm, Mid-20th Century, Wool On Hand-knotted Wool, Afghanistan
Artist: Tribu Des Baloutches
Artist : Tribe Des Baloutches
Balouchi rug with gulls decoration, tribal decoration found on Afghan rugs.
In wool on fine hand-knotted wool and dyed with natural pigments.
This elegant piece is from the mid-20th century, circa 1950-1960.
These rugs ( Baluchi - Beluchi - Balouchi ) are knotted and woven by the semi-nomadic and nomadic Baluchi tribes of Iran, Afghanistan, Russia and Central Asia.
Woven from sheep's wool mixed with camel ecru wool, horsehair is also often used.
These rugs can be dark, matte, earthy, red, wine-red or very light, camel-colored.
Our model features Gulls, commonly known as elephant feet.
They come in orange, curry and white and serve to enhance the rug's brown color.
The decoration is geometric, taking motifs from Caucasian but also ancient Persian settings.
The ethnic motifs are the tarantula, in the center of the gulls, kotchaks, rams' horns and numerous highly stylized flowers.
The most sought-after Baluchi are the animal ones and the prayers featuring a niche, the mihrab, rectangular specific to this tribe.
( the niche, indicates the Quibla, the direction of the Kaaba in Mecca).
Nowadays, we tend to think that Beluchi or Baluchi carpets originate in Baluchistan.
This is by no means the case; they are knotted further north, in Khorassan, Iran, on the Russo-Iranian border.
The most beautiful models are named after Mecched, the capital of Khorassan.
These are nomadic carpets, so sizes are quite small.
Until recently, warps and wefts were always in wool (before 1940), but the use of cotton has supplanted wool, and the knot used is still the Persian knot.
The large number of motifs used shows the Persian influence, and the geometric characters link them to the Central Asian carpet family, which is by no means the case .
The interior decoration often reveals great geometric elaboration, in its symbols, and symmetry.
The design is very elaborate, modern, it possesses a certain magic in shapes and colors.
The sumptuous border of the most beautiful effect, in the Afghan and Central Asian carpet style;
Béchir, with seven wide bands and eight fine bands feature grecques and friezes resembling Caucasian and Central Asian borders
Proof that the art of the carpet is a huge melting pot, a mixture of very many influences coming from all parts of the orient.
This carpet has been professionally and ecologically cleaned.
Dimensions: Width : 95 cm ( 37" ) x Length : 158 cm ( 62" )
