Ablutions Ewer, 19th Century, Bukhara Region, Uzbekistan, Collectible Condition
Artist: Ouzbeks
A round, domed ablution ewer from the Bukhara region, Uzbekistan, 19th century.
This piece supports an engraved, Dominican-shaped lid surmounted by a fretel.
This lid rests on a scalloped base.
A broad, S-shaped bronze handle terminates in a bronze collar beneath the lid.
The entire body of the jug, made of formerly tin-plated red copper, is decorated with epigraphic designs engraved on seventeen powerful gadroons.
Engraved leaf and flower motifs on friezes cover almost the entire object .
Three-sided long spout jug decorated with friezes,
very high flared neck with a twisted knot in the middle.
The gadrooned body bears a striking resemblance to Venetian and Provencal ewers or jugs.
The body rests on a wide foot decorated with ethnic motifs,
an extremely decorative and heavy model.
A beautiful patina covers the entire piece.
Dimensions:
height: 41 cm (16") - width: 28 cm (11") - body diameter: 16 cm (6.5") - Weight 1254 g.
The ewer or jug was, and still is today, mainly used for ablutions,
washing the face and hands with perfumed water, before meals and snacks and at the time of religious ceremonies.
"The feast of initiates, standing ready to serve,
the beauties on all sides hold the ewer in their hands;
The times of love wash their hands with all their soul;
While the beauties pour the water, ewer in hand"
Reading and translation , A.S. Melikian-Chirvani, 1973 p 119.
The ewers are emblematic and among the most beautiful objects of oriental art.
They are all different because all are special orders in the same way as the ancient prayer rugs.
