Sivas Kilim. Anatolia. Circa 1930. 270 X 160 Cm
A very attractive antique kilim from Sivas, in the Şarkışla region of Central Anatolia.
Woven using the traditional wool-on-wool technique, it features a particularly graphic composition punctuated by four large transverse motifs reminiscent of stylized niches.
This design can be linked to the style of mihraplı kilims, or “mihrab-style” kilims, found in the Sivas region, where the repetition here transforms the niche into a true architectural element.
The compartments feature small diamonds, crosses, and crocheted motifs, which belong to the Anatolian symbolic repertoire and are traditionally associated with protection and fertility. Fine horizontal bands provide rhythm to the overall design.
A beautiful palette of madder reds, natural ivory, tobacco brown, orange, and ochre yellow, whose variations lend great depth to the piece.
Extremely tight wool-on-wool weave.
In very good condition.
Circa 1930
Dimensions: 270 x 160 cm
