Macchad Rug, 137 X 230 Cm, Kork Wool, Hand-knotted In Iran In The Mid-20th Century

Macchad or Mechhed rug, Iran, circa 1950–1960.
Hand-knotted highland wool known as “kork.”
Density of approximately 360,000 knots per square meter,
in good condition, with slight signs of wear.
## Kork wool, which is very soft and fine, is the wool taken from the neck and belly of lambs during their very first shearing.

This beautiful rug comes from the province of Mechhed,
and is a stunning, intricately crafted piece.
A reasonable price for such fine quality.

Mashhad is Iran’s second-largest city, located in the northeast,
and is nicknamed “the city of a thousand faces.”

This rug features a large, sun-like rosette (influenced by Zoroastrianism) flanked by two broad, halberd-shaped pendants that span the field.
At the center of this medallion is an eight-petaled flower surrounded by small, stylized flowers.
Throughout the field are delicate, undulating floral scrolls and large bouquets.
The colors are fresh and vivid, dominated by a beautiful red and deep blues for the field and border.

Note the quality of the border, formed of large, fairly narrow scrolls decorated with flowers and a wide central band adorned with a floral design.
The field, featuring a beautiful, highly elaborate central medallion, is framed by four small spandrels;
the fringes are in fair condition and clean.

This rug has been professionally cleaned using eco-friendly methods.
