Shirvan Rug - Caucasus. Circa 1880. 150 X 104 Cm
A magnificent Caucasian rug from the Shirvan region of Azerbaijan.
Traditionally woven and knotted using wool-on-wool technique.
Extremely fine and tight weave and knot work.
The rug is supple and light as a cloud.
The pile is short.
The central field, in a weathered blue-gray, features a multitude of hexagonal and diamond-shaped motifs. The organized and repetitive pattern creates a very harmonious whole. This effect is further enhanced by subtle, very soft hues.

Overall, the rug is in very good condition. Edging and backstitching.
Some slight and discreet signs of wear in places. This rug is 150 years old.
