Kirman Raver or Kerman rug, Iran, late 19th century, circa 1880-1900.
Made of hand-knotted, short-pile kork wool, a technique characteristic of the Raver style.
It measures 122 cm wide by 195 cm long, with a knot density of approximately 450,000 knots per square meter.
This superb medallion rug features a design of interlacing patterns, birthwort flowers, pistachio blossoms typical of Kirman and its region, roses, and hyacinths, in sublime shades of blue and pink on an almost reddish-rust background.
The very soft and fine kork wool is taken from under the neck and belly of lambs.
The rug is approximately 5 mm thick, and the knot density and quality of the wool make it a strong and durable rug.
Kirman rugs often feature floral designs and most often have a medallion that stands out against a plain background; in this case, the medallion motifs... are repeated in the border and the four spandrels (corners or angles of the field).
Some of these carpets also feature large animal scenes. Our model, a Kirman Raver, originates from the city of Raver in northern Kirman. It features a magnificent medallion of great delicacy and beauty.
The shades of this carpet are remarkable and very soft. Kerman is the largest city in southeastern Iran and the capital of the province of the same name.
The reputation of Kirman and Raver carpets is due to the excellence of the "Ostads," these incredibly skilled cartoon designers. They have preserved the sense of tradition of these large and solid Persian carpets.
The profound harmony of colors results from a perfect balance that testifies to the great creativity of the Kirman artisans.
This antique piece is in good condition with some wear consistent with age. It has been professionally and ecologically cleaned. The edges show some wear, it It is possible to restore them.
