Before discussing its composition and motifs, let’s begin with a thorough assessment of its condition. Our restorer, Saïd, has fully protected it. The fringes at each end have been completely reworked and secured with a backstitch. Similarly, the borders along the lengths have been restored. About 3 or 4 days of restoration work have given this piece a new lease on life. We have barely touched its surface, given the piece’s age and the wear and tear of time. That said, if you wish, we can go more in-depth and restore its entire surface as well.
The piece is remarkable. The comb-shaped motifs are called “parmaklı,” which means “fingers” in Turkish. They symbolize the clan, the family, community life, and solidarity within a group. The graphic power is striking and perfectly executed in a succession of horizontal bands covering the entire surface. The palette of plant-based dyes complements this composition by creating contrasts and depth. It is a true work of art, suitable for display on the floor or hung on a wall. The format is rare, compact, and almost square. I should note here that this is a fragment and that the original piece was over 3 meters long—perhaps even much longer, given its width.
Absolutely beautiful—"parmaklı" kilims truly have something that others don’t. Mesmerizing!
