This antique Torba Yomut front panel, dating from the late 19th century, around 1880, features a weave of remarkable precision—particularly tight and even. The fine, supple wool allows for truly intricate detailing here.
The composition is particularly understated.
Against a rich madder-red background, very fine decorative bands follow one another with great regularity. They are enlivened by small, polychrome geometric motifs that are extremely refined, almost miniature in scale. The alternation of narrow bands and more richly ornamented bands gives the piece its rhythm, while preserving the graphic simplicity characteristic of Turkmen textiles.
The color palette is particularly beautiful: madder red, deep brown, natural ivory, touches of blue-green, and above all a superb indigo blue that is surprisingly luminous. Plant-based dyes lend this distinctive depth to antique pieces: the colors are never flat and seem to vary slightly with the light.

What is so appealing here is precisely the contrast between the apparent simplicity of the composition and the extreme sophistication of its execution.
