Kazak Rug. Caucasus. Circa 1900. 215 X 136 Cm

In a state of preservation that borders on a miracle, a superb antique rug from the Caucasus.

Traditionally woven and knotted with wool over wool.
The knot structure creates a rather short pile, as is typical of most antique Caucasian rugs, allowing the design to retain all its precision.
The central field features a magnificent range of indigo blues, from a deep, almost nocturnal blue to lighter, slightly grayish tones. Wonderful abrash runs across the field: these natural variations, resulting from different dye baths and hand-spun wool, create subtle shifts in tone and give the rug extraordinary depth and vibrancy.
The composition is organized around a vast indigo-blue central field, enlivened by a succession of stylized geometric and floral motifs. The highly rhythmic design plays on repetition while retaining numerous small variations. Multiple borders frame and structure the central field, following a stylistic vocabulary characteristic of antique Caucasian rugs. The overall effect offers a remarkable balance between the density of the decoration, the precision of the design, and its graphic power.
The dyes are exclusively plant-based. Their exceptional quality accounts for the remarkable depth and luminosity of the colors, which range from subtle shades to particularly dense and saturated hues.
It is this contrast between the intensity of the colors, the variations in indigo, and the extraordinary freshness of the piece as a whole that makes this rug particularly captivating.
