Incredible colors! Hand-knotted wool rug, decorated with four polylobed medallions, circa 1980.
This rug, in perfect condition, features four intricately crafted medallions:
burgundy, midnight blue, pale blue, and salmon, set within a field of almost golden yellow with khaki undertones.
The vibrant colors, dominated by the shimmering burgundy, beautifully highlight the overall design. It is not uncommon to find very bright colors—purple, yellow, red, orange, and blue—in rugs from this region, which enliven the decorations of these knotted or woven rugs.
A multitude of stylized blue and white animals can be seen scattered across the field.
Derbent rugs originate from the upper reaches of Dagestan, near the Caspian Sea, and remain emblematic of the Russian Caucasus.
From the 1960s onward, only wool-on-wool rugs were produced, but However, wool on cotton is also available.
The border, followed by two Greek key patterns, features a design of colorful stylized crabs.
