Pair Of Large Maffrash Cushions. Caucasus. Circa 1850. 92 X 42 Cm (x2)
This pair of cushions has just come out of our workshop. Let’s start by taking a closer look at the piece.
The front is made using the Sumak technique, which is similar to embroidery. The back is made of velvet for softness and comfort. It’s worth noting that Catherine, our seamstress, has masterfully created this set in a cohesive manner—both in terms of texture and the harmonious color of the velvet, which precisely matches the indigo blue shade on the front.
Let’s talk specifically about the front: a pair of fragments of Maffrash Karabag originating from the Caucasus. The weaving is masterful, of extreme finesse. The motifs seem carved into the fabric, such is the precision of every contour. Here we see what I like to call refinement—the refinement born of the craftsmanship of the most experienced weavers.
Dyed exclusively with plant-based dyes, the indigo blues are ravishing.
Stylized dragon and scorpion motifs, both of which are associated with protection.
More than just highly decorative cushions, these pieces embody the entire history of exceptional weaving, expressed in ultra-harmonious and vibrant hues.
The Maffrash fragments date from the mid-19th century
