Kashmar or Kachmar rug, made of hand-knotted Kork wool from the Mecched region in the province of Khorasan, in perfect condition, circa 1980–1990.
This exceptional rug features an incredible field enhanced by a large rosette topped with two broad pendants.
The field is covered with a rich design of arabesques, foliage, and plant motifs.
Highland wool known as “kork” on a cotton weft, with approximately 350,000 knots per square meter.
This exceptional piece measures 290 cm wide by 395 cm long.
The pile, fringes, and selvedges are in perfect condition, as good as new.
The shades that make up this rug are:
raspberry, pale blue, midnight blue, orange, ivory, buff, dusty pink, black, almond green, and curry yellow.
Khorasan rugs:
hand-knotted rugs originating from the Khorasan province in northeastern Iran.
These tightly knotted rugs have a cotton warp and feature typical Persian designs, such as medallions, palmettes, arabesques, and mir-e butha or Herati motifs, and may include verses from the Quran, which is becoming increasingly rare.
The city of Kashmar (کاشمر) has a very long history; its former name was Torshiz.
Its carpets are of very high quality; they have been woven for centuries using thick, soft wool and are certainly the most comfortable of all Persian carpets (see my other Kashmar carpets in my gallery).
## Very soft and fine kork wool is the wool sheared from the neck and belly of lambs during their very first shearing only.
Kashmar rugs are characterized by their large sizes and unique designs, such as scenes depicting trees, flowers, vases, or Persian architectural motifs.
They often depict important historical events in Persian history.
In Kashmar, masterpieces are woven that showcase a harmonious blend of colors, intricate designs, and fine details, reflecting the Persians’ love for art and beauty.
