Gajeri Kilim - Uzbekistan. Circa 1900. 308 X 146 Cm

The term “gajeri” refers to a type of kilim with highly elaborate decoration, in which woven bands are embellished with motifs created using complementary techniques, notably embroidery or additional weaving.
These pieces differ from kilims with large central fields in their rhythmic, almost architectural construction, consisting of a succession of narrow bands and wider decorative panels.
Antique gajeris are generally attributed to the Uzbek peoples of Central Asia, particularly in regions near northern Afghanistan and southern Uzbekistan. They were used primarily as wall hangings, blankets, or textiles for domestic use, and occasionally for equestrian purposes.
In this example, the color palette is dominated by several shades of red—ranging from madder red to brick red and reddish brown—combined with natural ivory, blue-gray, a very dark blue, and an almost black brown. Small touches of yellow ochre, orange, and olive green punctuate certain motifs and reinforce the composition’s highly rhythmic character.

This type of piece is extremely rare; only a few exist on the market.

Thanks to its texture and lightness, this kilim is ideal for hanging on a wall, draping over a bed, or any other decorative arrangement. I therefore do not recommend placing it on the floor.
