Mut Kilim - Taurus Mountains. Anatolia. 1930s. 337 X 150 Cm
It is definitely the colors and composition—its patterns—that allow us to determine a piece’s geographical origin. The same goes for its dating.
Here, there’s not the slightest doubt; the piece is documented.
It is indeed an antique piece from Mut, which was a small village at the time, located in the Taurus Mountains in southeastern Anatolia.
Notice the flamboyant pattern inside each diamond-shaped medallion; the Turks call it “lion’s mane.” It is actually a symbol evoking protection, and it is complemented by two wolf’s muzzles on either side.
The colors—as I mentioned earlier—are exclusively natural and plant-based. The palette centers on a brick-ochre background accented with orange and straw yellow. The contrasts are created by ecru patterns. The harmony is subtle and elegant. These are the unmistakable hallmarks of traditional kilims from Mut.
Woven wool on wool.
Circa 1930
Very good condition
