A rug like a painting!
Tekke rug knotted by the Turkmen of Central Asia in wool around 1970.
Beautiful size, 198 cm wide by 298 cm long, in very good condition (not to say perfect).
Velvet, fringes and edges in superb condition.
Note the quality of the main ethnic pattern and the cruciform design of the border. Knotted in a high quality soft wool and decorated with a rare pattern.
It is similar to a decoration originating from the Caucasus, the "Tchelaberd" pattern. Shapes and designs have traveled extensively throughout distant Central Asia.
Pattern repeated consistently across the field by six large, very elaborate medallions.
They bring great elegance and heraldic character to this piece.
In doing so, the borders are generally the same color as the field.
This is part of the nomadic lifestyle of moving away from ostentatious forms.

The soft, shiny wool is densely knotted and very fine, the pile is flush and this rug has a beautiful patina.
Turkmen handcrafted rugs are very well made. In other regions, nomadic rugs are often loosely knotted and have long pile, unlike Afghan or Turkmen rugs which have tight knots (Persian knot) velvet features and goat hair or sheep wool, supple and shiny.
The use of goat hair and camels is more common for the warp and weft.
These rugs have a masculine aura.
They have always been appreciated since the 19th century for the decoration of businessmen's offices.
These majestic rugs are certainly the best in Central Asia and are the work of the Turkmen tribes.
The same spirit of knotting and pattern is found in neighboring rugs from Turkmenistan but also in Afghanistan.
These rugs remain with the Caucasus the hardest to differentiate, so many are the patterns and specific to the clans of all Central Asia.
