Lacquered And Gilt Wooden Tabernacle, Veneto Region, Early 19th Century

Rare and highly decorative wooden tabernacle from the Veneto region, probably Venice, dating to the very early years of the 19th century. The piece features an urn-shaped trapezoidal structure raised on four finely carved and gilt ferine feet, identifiable as lion’s paws. The surface is finished with a light lacquer and rich water-gilding, of fine quality and well preserved. Carved friezes and mouldings frame panels painted in a soft sage green, enriched with elegant gilt foliate motifs, executed with refined craftsmanship in a Neoclassical taste. The front is distinguished by the original circular door, decorated with a radiant eye set within a mandorla, an iconography of strong symbolic meaning traditionally associated with the Divinity or the Eye of Providence. The pronounced modelling of the eyelids and brow arch represents a rare and unusual detail in contemporary tabernacles, lending the object a particularly evocative character. The sides are adorned with high-relief gilt lion heads, enhancing the solemn and decorative presence of the piece. The upper section retains a gilt frieze now positioned centrally; visible traces indicate that it originally belonged to a larger decorative ensemble, later adapted. The original upper cover is missing.Overall, a tabernacle of remarkable decorative and symbolic appeal, rare in type and quality, suitable both for collectors of religious furnishings and as a striking decorative statement piece.Dimensions: width 103 cm; height 56 cm; depth 49 cm.For further information, photographs or technical details, please do not hesitate to contact us.
